Apply to lead a Chinese art history summer reading group for ACAH members! In order to provide an opportunity for members to learn informally from one another, as well as foster a sense of community during the summer months when planning for conferences and other academic events for the year ahead typically takes place, we are issuing a call for proposals for a reading group leader. Applications are warmly invited from graduate students, faculty, curators, and academic/museum staff. The two previous ACAH reading groups were organized on the topics of “Is There an Expiration Date on Writings about Chinese Art?” (Nancy Steinhardt) and “Chinese Garden Culture” (Amy McNair).
The reading group leader should be prepared to:
- Lead three virtual 60-90 minute sessions during summer 2024 on a topic of their choice pertaining to the state of the field or new approaches and directions to the study of the art and architectural history and visual cultures of China, or of the Chinese diaspora
- Manage scheduling of the three sessions
- Develop a reading list of 2-3 articles/chapters per session that emphasizes historiography and methodological approaches to the selected topic, including interdisciplinary or comparative/theoretical readings. The reading list may also include books, if readily available to reading group participants (ideally open access or library copies).
- Honorarium for reading group leader: USD$400
ACAH will:
- Publicize the reading group and issue a call for participants through the ACAH listserv
- Provide support for the scanning of articles and chapters, if needed (note: ACAH cannot provide funding for the purchase of books)
- Provide a Zoom meeting link, if needed
In order to apply to be a reading group leader, please submit the following to achinesearthistory@gmail.com by May 29, 2024:
- Name and area of specialization
- Brief introduction of proposed topic for the reading group (up to 150 words)
